This technology harnesses the sun's radiation and converts it into thermal energy, which can then be stored and utilized.

The core component of most solar thermal systems is the solar collector. These collectors are typically mounted on rooftops or in open areas receiving direct sunlight. They contain dark-colored surfaces designed to absorb solar radiation efficiently. A fluid, often a mixture of water and antifreeze, circulates through tubes within the collector, absorbing the heat. This heated fluid is then transported to a storage tank, usually a well-insulated hot water cylinder.

In a domestic hot water system, the heated fluid from the collector circulates through a heat exchanger within the storage tank, transferring its thermal energy to the domestic water. For space heating, the heated fluid can be used to warm radiators or underfloor heating systems. In colder climates or during periods of low solar irradiation, a supplementary heating system, such as a conventional boiler or heat pump, is often used to ensure a consistent supply of hot water and heating.
