It is typically created by adding suffixes or, less commonly, by prefixes or compounding. The exact semantics can vary by language, and augmentatives can express physical size, emphasis, admiration, humor, or contempt, depending on context and culture.

Formation is usually productive through affixation, but languages differ in which suffixes are standard. In many Iberian and Romance languages, suffixes attach to nouns and adjectives to yield an augmentative: for example, in Spanish casón or casona (a large house) and manaza (a big hand); in Portuguese casão or casona and gatão (a large cat). Italian often uses -one: casone (a large house), gattone (a big cat). Other languages may employ different suffixes or prefer periphrastic constructions using adjectives like grande to convey augmentation.

Usage and connotations are language-specific. Augmentatives can be neutral descriptors of size, but they frequently carry evaluative overtones, ranging from affectionate or humorous to coarse or pejorative. They may also be used to intensify a statement or to express stereotype, affection, or irony, depending on tone and setting.
