An audiogram is a graph that represents a person's hearing ability. It is the result of an audiological test, also known as an audiometry test. The audiogram charts the softest sounds a person can hear at different frequencies, which are measured in Hertz (Hz). The lower the frequency, the deeper the sound, and the higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. The volume, or intensity, of the sound is measured in decibels (dB).

The audiogram typically shows two axes. The horizontal axis represents frequency, usually ranging from 250 Hz to 8000 Hz. The vertical axis represents intensity, ranging from -10 dB to 120 dB, with 0 dB being the threshold of normal hearing. Lower numbers on the vertical axis indicate softer sounds that can be heard.

During an audiometry test, sounds are presented to the individual through headphones, and they indicate when they hear a sound by pressing a button or raising their hand. The audiologist records the softest intensity at which the person can hear each frequency. This information is then plotted on the audiogram. The resulting pattern reveals the type and degree of hearing loss, if any. Different symbols are used to represent the results for the left and right ears. Understanding an audiogram is crucial for diagnosing hearing impairments and determining appropriate interventions, such as hearing aids.
