Atingo is a small municipality located in the Oriental Department of Colombia, situated near the Magdalena River. The settlement emerged in the late 19th century during the expansion of agricultural frontiers in the region. According to the 2018 census, the municipality has an estimated population of roughly 8,500 residents, with the largest concentration of inhabitants living in the central urban zone and the remainder spread across surrounding rural hamlets.

The local economy is dominated by subsistence agriculture and small-scale livestock rearing. Rice, cassava, and plantains are the principal crops cultivated in the fertile alluvial soils of the river basin. In addition, the area hosts a modest fishing sector, largely focused on catfish and tilapia, which supplies both local markets and nearby larger towns. The municipality also engages in artisanal crafts, such as weaving, which preserve regional textile traditions.

Infrastructure in Atingo includes a primary and secondary school, a municipal health clinic, and a network of paved and gravel roads connecting it to neighboring towns and the departmental capital. Public services are administered by an elected mayor and municipal council that oversee local affairs, public works, and budget allocation. The community observes several annual cultural festivals that celebrate both its indigenous heritage and its Catholic traditions, featuring music, dance, and communal feasts.

Today, Atingo remains largely rural and agricultural, yet it actively participates in regional development initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, and sustainable land use.
