Attenuation refers to the reduction of a wave's or signal's amplitude or intensity as it propagates through a medium or space. It affects sound, light, radio waves, and particle beams. Attenuation results from loss mechanisms such as absorption (conversion to other energy forms), scattering (redirecting energy away from the original path), and geometric spreading (divergence of the wavefront). In many contexts, an attenuation coefficient or loss factor quantifies the rate of decay.

In optics and spectroscopy, exponential attenuation is described by Beer's law: I(x) = I0 e^{-μ x}, where μ is the attenuation coefficient that depends on material and wavelength. In communications and radiography, attenuation is often expressed in decibels: L_dB = 10 log10(I0/I) = 4.343 μ x for intensity, or in the amplitude form, 20 log10(A/A0) = -8.686 μ x. Attenuation can be frequency dependent and may involve dispersion, so different frequencies decay at different rates.

Domains and examples: Optical fibers rely on low-attenuation materials to preserve signal strength over long distances; atmospheric and marine attenuation affect optical and radio links, as well as lidar and radar performance; X-ray imaging uses attenuation coefficients to form image contrast; in seismology, seismic waves lose energy as they travel through Earth, described by attenuation coefficients or quality factors (Q).

Measurement and mitigation: Attenuation is measured with calibrated sources and receivers, often across a range of frequencies. It is mitigated by material choice, surface coatings, and design strategies such as anti-reflection treatments, hollow-core or low-loss fibers, and amplification. Attenuation is distinct from dispersion, which concerns the spreading of signals in time due to frequency-dependent speed.
