These systems typically involve nuclear reactions, such as fission or fusion, to produce energy that could enable long-duration missions or high-thrust propulsion beyond what traditional chemical rockets can achieve.

The concept of atomic satellites emerged in the mid-20th century alongside advancements in nuclear technology. Early proposals included the use of nuclear thermal rockets, where a reactor heats propellant (such as hydrogen) to produce thrust, or nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) systems, where nuclear power generates electricity for ion thrusters or other advanced propulsion methods.
