Asumisoikeus, often translated as right of occupancy or housing right, is a unique Finnish legal concept that provides an individual with the right to live in a specific apartment indefinitely, under certain conditions. It is not ownership of the property, nor is it a traditional rental agreement. Instead, the holder of an asumisoikeus pays a one-time, non-interest-bearing fee to acquire this right, and then pays a monthly housing charge that covers maintenance, interest on the original loan taken by the housing company, and other operating costs.
