Astronautica, sometimes used as a synonym for astronautics, is the field concerned with the design, development, testing, and operation of spacecraft and related spaceflight systems.

Its scope includes propulsion, spacecraft structure, avionics, guidance, navigation and control, orbital mechanics, life support, mission planning, and the ground segments that support operations. It also covers safety, reliability, and the management of harsh space environments and system integration.

Historical progress began with early rocketry in China and the Middle East, followed by modern advances in Russia and the United States. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky formulated key orbital mechanics, while Robert Goddard conducted the first liquid-fueled rocket launch. The Space Age began in the late 1950s.

Today astronautica is a global field pursued by space agencies, international partnerships, and private companies. Education in aerospace engineering and related disciplines trains engineers and operators to design, test, and operate systems for research, communications, navigation, Earth observation, and exploration.

The term appears in academic and popular contexts and is sometimes used in fiction to refer to spaceflight technology.
