Assigner, also encountered as assigner/assignerer in some languages, is a term used to describe the party who transfers or conveys rights, property, or claims to another party through an assignment. In English-language legal usage, the more common term is assignor, with the recipient called the assignee. Assigner is therefore often viewed as a variant or a direct translation from languages such as Danish or Norwegian, where the root verb means to appoint or transfer.

In legal practice, an assignment transfers rights under a contract, a loan, a patent or other intellectual property, a debt, or other encumbrances. The essential relationship is that the assigner (the transferor) conveys one or more defined rights to the assignee (the recipient). The exact effect of an assignment depends on jurisdiction and the terms of the contract: some assignments are effective upon execution, others require notice to the obligor, and some may release the assigner from liability only if a release is expressly provided.

Liability and warranties can vary. In many contexts, the assigner may remain liable for the underlying obligation unless the contract or law provides a release or novation. The assignee typically steps into the position of the holder of the rights and may enforce them against the obligor.
