Ascomicetos, also known as sac fungi, constitute a large and diverse division within the fungal kingdom, characterized by their unique reproductive structures. These structures, called asci, are sac-like or flask-shaped and typically contain eight ascospores, which are the sexual spores produced by these fungi. This class is a major lineage of the Ascomycota phylum, which is one of the largest phyla in the kingdom Fungi.

The diversity of ascomicetos is immense, encompassing a wide range of forms and ecological roles. Many are microscopic, existing as yeasts or molds, while others form macroscopic fruiting bodies, known as ascocarps, which can vary greatly in shape and size. These ascocarps are often cup-shaped (apothecia) or flask-shaped (perithecia), but can also be more complex structures.

Ascomicetos play crucial roles in ecosystems as decomposers, breaking down organic matter such as dead plants and animals. They are also important in symbiotic relationships, notably in lichens, where they form a mutualistic partnership with algae or cyanobacteria. Some ascomicetos are pathogenic, causing diseases in plants and animals, while others are beneficial, used in the production of foods like bread, cheese, and alcoholic beverages, as well as in the synthesis of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical compounds. Their widespread distribution and varied lifestyles make them a significant group in both natural and human environments.
