Aryyilirenkaan is a term used in chemistry to denote an aryl ring, typically a benzene-based ring, that forms a substituent or the core of an organic molecule. In Finnish-language and some European texts, aryl rings are described as planar, conjugated systems with a delocalized pi electron cloud that provides aromatic stability.

An aryl ring is usually planar and sp2-hybridized, with substitution replacing one hydrogen atom to form bonds to other groups. The most common example is the phenyl group, C6H5–, derived from benzene. Other examples include naphthyl and biphenyl units. Heteroaryl rings, which contain atoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur within the ring, are related but are typically classified separately as heteroaryl.

Nomenclature follows the parent aromatic hydrocarbon. The simple phenyl group is the archetype, while more complex aryl systems are named by the fused or substituted ring structure (e.g., naphthyl, anthracyl) or by substituent descriptors attached to the ring. In many contexts, aryl groups are treated as substituents Ar– in chemical formulas and reaction schemes.

Reactivity of aryl rings is dominated by their aromatic nature. They participate readily in electrophilic aromatic substitution and various cross-coupling reactions, such as Suzuki–Miyaura, Heck, and Negishi, which form new C–C bonds at the aryl site. They can also undergo nucleophilic substitutions on activated rings. The presence and arrangement of aryl rings influence properties like lipophilicity, rigidity, and molecular recognition, making them central to pharmaceuticals, dyes, and organic materials.
