Arturmerone, also known as ar-turmerone, is a natural organic compound classified as a sesquiterpene ketone. It is one of the turmerones found in the essential oil of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and contributes to the characteristic aroma of turmeric oil alongside alpha-turmerone and beta-turmerone.

Source and occurrence: In turmeric rhizomes, the essential oil is a complex mixture in which ar-turmerone is one of the more consistently reported turmerone isomers. It can be isolated from turmeric essential oil through distillation and subsequent fractionation, and its relative abundance varies with cultivar, growing conditions, and extraction method.

Chemical and physical properties: Ar-turmerone is lipophilic and is typically encountered as a colorless to pale-yellow liquid. As a member of the turmerone family, its structure includes a sesquiterpene skeleton with a ketone functional group. It is not water-soluble and is usually present only in small to moderate amounts in essential oil preparations.

Biological activity and research: Turmerone-rich extracts, including ar-turmerone, have been investigated for a range of biological activities. Preclinical studies have reported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and, in some contexts, anticancer effects. Notably, some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that ar-turmerone may influence neural cells, including promotion of neural stem cell proliferation and neurogenesis, but these findings are preliminary and not sufficient to establish clinical efficacy or safety.

Safety and regulatory notes: Concentrated turmerone compounds can be irritant to skin or mucous membranes and are not approved as medicines. Turmeric essential oil is used in flavoring and traditional applications, but ar-turmerone is mainly of interest in research contexts and is not an approved therapeutic agent.
