An art installation is a three-dimensional artwork or multimedia environment designed to transform the perception of a space and immerse the viewer in a specific experiential context. Installations are often site-specific, conceived for a particular gallery, museum, public space, or outdoor setting, and may be temporary or permanent in duration and scope.

They frequently combine sculpture, video, sound, light, performance, and digital media. Installations emphasize spatial relationships, time, and audience interaction, inviting viewers to enter, walk through, or manipulate elements within the space. Because they rely on a setting, meanings can depend on location, lighting, season, and the presence of spectators.

Historically, installation emerged in the 1960s and 1970s as artists sought to move beyond framed objects toward immersive environments. Influences include conceptual art, Fluxus, and environmental art. Since then, practices have expanded to include interactive and immersive media, site-specific sculpture, and large-scale public interventions that engage everyday spaces.

Creation involves concept development, site analysis, fabrication, and on-site assembly or modification of the venue. Many installations are conceived as temporary, though some become permanent fixtures. Curation, conservation, and documentation pose challenges, particularly for ephemeral works that rely on time, weather, or audience participation.

Installations can address a wide range of themes, from formal experiments with space and perception to social, political, or ecological commentary. They remain a dynamic form that blurs the line between artwork, environment, and experience, inviting ongoing dialogue about how people encounter art in built and natural environments.
