aromaticamine
An aromatic amine is any compound in which an amino group is attached to an aromatic ring. The simplest member is aniline (phenylamine). The class includes primary aromatic amines (Ar-NH2) as well as secondary (Ar-NH-R) and tertiary (Ar-NR2) derivatives, where R may be hydrogen or an alkyl/aryl group.
The nitrogen lone pair is conjugated with the aromatic ring, which reduces basicity relative to aliphatic amines.
Industrial synthesis typically starts from nitroarenes, which are reduced to the corresponding amines. Other methods include
Major applications include dyes and pigments (especially azo dyes), polymer and rubber additives, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
Safety: many aromatic amines are toxic and some are carcinogenic (for example, benzidine and related compounds).
