An armguard is a piece of protective gear worn on the forearm, typically by archers, fencers, and some types of historical reenactors. Its primary purpose is to shield the wearer's arm from injury. In archery, the armguard protects the bow arm from being struck by the bowstring as it is released. This impact can be painful and can cause bruising or welts. The armguard also helps to prevent the wearer's sleeve from catching on the bowstring, which could disrupt the shot.
