Arbeidsmarkttatus, or labor market status, is a standard classification used in Norwegian statistics and policy analysis to describe an individual's current position in the labor market. It indicates whether a person is employed, unemployed and seeking work, or outside the labor force.

Common categories include: employed (sysselsatt) for persons with paid work; unemployed (arbeidsledig) for persons not in paid work who are actively seeking and available for work; and outside the labor force (utenfor arbeidsmarkedet) for those not currently seeking work and not available, such as students, retirees, homemakers, or those on long-term sick leave. Some data collections also note participation in activation measures or training programs as separate statuses.

Measurement and use: Arbeidsmarkttatus is a central variable in national labour market statistics, collected from sources such as the Norwegian Labour Force Survey (AKU) and administrative registers from NAV. It is used to calculate key indicators including the employment rate, unemployment rate, and labour force participation rate, and to evaluate the effects of labor market policies, activation programs, and social security initiatives. Researchers and policymakers rely on this status to track changes over time and to compare groups by age, education, region, and other characteristics.

Limitations: Definitions and categories can vary across datasets and over time, which can affect comparability. The criteria for what constitutes “unemployed” or “actively seeking” may differ, and some individuals in transition between statuses can be misclassified. In addition, the status may not capture the full complexity of work arrangements, such as underemployment or informal work.
