Apoptóticos refers to cells undergoing apoptosis, a process also known as programmed cell death. This is a tightly regulated and essential biological mechanism that plays a critical role in development, tissue homeostasis, and the elimination of damaged or infected cells. Unlike necrosis, which is typically caused by injury and results in uncontrolled cell lysis and inflammation, apoptosis is a deliberate and orderly dismantling of the cell.

The process of apoptosis involves a series of biochemical events leading to characteristic cell changes. These include cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation, and the formation of membrane-bound vesicles called apoptotic bodies. These bodies are then efficiently cleared by phagocytic cells, preventing the release of cellular contents and minimizing inflammation.

Apoptosis is triggered by various internal and external signals. Internal signals can arise from DNA damage, oxidative stress, or developmental cues. External signals include the binding of specific ligands to cell surface receptors. Once initiated, a cascade of enzymes called caspases becomes activated, orchestrating the dismantling of cellular components.

The precise regulation of apoptosis is crucial. Too little apoptosis can lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation, as seen in cancer, or the accumulation of damaged cells, contributing to neurodegenerative diseases. Conversely, excessive apoptosis can result in tissue atrophy and loss, observed in conditions like AIDS or ischemic injury. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis is vital for developing therapeutic strategies for a wide range of diseases.
