Antiferromagnetic materials are a class of magnetic solids that exhibit a particular ordering of their magnetic moments. In an ideal antiferromagnet, the magnetic moments of adjacent atoms or ions are aligned in opposite directions, resulting in a net magnetization of zero. This cancellation of magnetic moments occurs in a regular, repeating pattern throughout the crystal structure.

The magnetic moments in antiferromagnetic materials are typically associated with the unpaired electrons in atoms or ions. These moments arise from the electron's spin and orbital angular momentum. The interaction that leads to the antiparallel alignment is known as the exchange interaction, a quantum mechanical phenomenon. While the net magnetization is zero, antiferromagnetic materials do possess a critical temperature, called the Néel temperature (T_N), above which this ordered magnetic structure disappears and the material becomes paramagnetic.

Unlike ferromagnetic materials, which are strongly attracted to magnets, antiferromagnetic materials do not typically exhibit a strong macroscopic magnetic response at room temperature due to the cancellation of magnetic moments. However, their unique magnetic properties can be exploited in various technological applications. For instance, they are crucial components in the read heads of hard disk drives, where they are used to stabilize the magnetic state of the ferromagnetic layers. Their magnetic behavior also makes them subjects of fundamental research in condensed matter physics, contributing to our understanding of magnetism and quantum phenomena.
