Antiblokeringssystem, often abbreviated as ABS, is a safety system used in motorized vehicles. Its primary function is to prevent the wheels from locking up during braking. When a driver applies the brakes forcefully, especially on slippery surfaces, the wheels can stop rotating while the vehicle is still in motion. This locked-wheel condition leads to a loss of steering control and significantly increases the stopping distance.

ABS works by monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel. If it detects that a wheel is about to lock up, the system rapidly modulates the brake pressure to that specific wheel. It does this by momentarily releasing and reapplying the brakes in quick succession, allowing the wheel to regain traction and continue rotating. This rapid pulsing action is often felt by the driver as a vibration or pulsation in the brake pedal.

The main benefit of ABS is improved vehicle control during emergency braking situations. By preventing wheel lock-up, ABS allows the driver to maintain steering capability, enabling them to steer around obstacles while braking. This can be crucial in avoiding accidents. Additionally, in many surface conditions, ABS can help reduce the overall stopping distance compared to a vehicle without the system, although on certain loose surfaces like gravel or deep snow, a locked wheel might theoretically dig in and stop faster, ABS prioritizes control in most scenarios. ABS is a standard safety feature in most modern cars and is mandated in many regions for new vehicle production.
