Antiaggregatory is an adjective describing substances or processes that prevent aggregation—the clumping together of particles, cells, or macromolecules. The term is used across several fields, including pharmacology, materials science, and biochemistry, to denote mechanisms or agents that hinder aggregation under specific conditions.

In pharmacology, antiaggregatory actions reduce the risk of thrombosis by inhibiting platelet aggregation. Common mechanisms include inhibition of thromboxane A2 synthesis by aspirin, blockade of the ADP receptor P2Y12 by clopidogrel or ticlopidine, and direct inhibition of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor by certain antibodies or small molecules. Clinically, antiaggregatory therapy is used to prevent myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and complications after coronary stenting. Bleeding risk is a key safety consideration.

In materials science and colloid chemistry, antiaggregatory additives stabilize suspensions and prevent particle aggregation. They act through steric stabilization, electrostatic repulsion, or both, often by adsorbing to particle surfaces. Examples include surfactants, polymers such as polyvinylpyrrolidone, and electrolytes that modify zeta potential. These effects are important in pharmaceuticals, paints, inks, ceramics, and food systems to maintain uniform particle dispersion.

In biochemistry, anti-aggregation describes strategies to inhibit misfolded protein aggregation, a feature of several neurodegenerative diseases. Small molecules, peptides, and molecular chaperones are studied for their capacity to prevent amyloid or oligomer formation. While promising in laboratory studies, no universal anti-aggregation therapy exists, and results are highly target- and context-dependent.
