Anoksgenic is a nonstandard term occasionally encountered in discussions of oxygen-related biology and geology. It is used to describe processes, environments, or organisms that either do not involve oxygen production or do not require oxygen. In formal writing, the terms anoxic (lacking oxygen) and anoxygenic (not producing oxygen during a process such as photosynthesis) are preferred, and their meanings depend on context.

In biology, anoxygenic photosynthesis is carried out by certain bacteria that use reduced compounds such as H2S or organic molecules as electron donors. These organisms convert carbon dioxide into organic matter under light but release little or no molecular oxygen, in contrast to oxygenic photosynthesis performed by cyanobacteria and plants.

In environmental science and geology, anoxic environments are ecosystems or zones lacking dissolved oxygen, such as deep sediments, stratified lakes, wastewater systems, and some oceanic oxygen minimum zones. Microbial processes common in anoxic conditions include fermentation, sulfate reduction, methanogenesis, and anaerobic respiration, which shape regional carbon and sulfur cycles.

Terminology notes: due to inconsistent usage, "anoksgenic" should be treated as nonstandard. Where precision is required, prefer "anoxic" for absence of oxygen and "anoxygenic" for processes that do not produce oxygen. The term may be encountered in historical texts or in contexts where authors use nonstandard spellings, but standard terminology is recommended for clear scientific communication.
