Anioonivahetus, also known as anion exchange, is a separation technique used to isolate or purify molecules based on their negative charge. It relies on the principle of electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. In an anion exchange process, a stationary phase, typically a resin or membrane, is functionalized with positively charged groups. These positively charged sites attract and bind negatively charged molecules, or anions, present in a solution.

The process begins by passing a sample containing anions through a column or bed packed with the anion exchange material. As the sample flows, anions in the solution that possess a charge opposite to that of the stationary phase will bind to the functionalized sites. Other components of the sample that do not have a negative charge, or have a weaker negative charge, will pass through the column unhindered.

Once the desired anions are bound to the stationary phase, they can be eluted, or released, by introducing a solution with a higher concentration of competing anions or by changing the pH of the eluent. These competing anions, often simple salts, displace the bound anions from the stationary phase. The separated anions are then collected in the eluent for further analysis or use.
