Anholdt is a term used in Danish law to describe the temporary detention of a person by the police. It is not a formal arrest, but rather a measure taken when there is suspicion that a person has committed a crime or is about to commit one. The purpose of an anholdt is typically to secure evidence, prevent further offenses, or to facilitate investigation.

A person who is anholdt may be held for a limited period, usually no more than 24 hours. During this time, the police can question the individual, search their person or property, and gather information relevant to the suspected crime. The legal basis for an anholdt is found in the Danish Administration of Justice Act.

The distinction between an anholdt and a formal arrest (anholdelse) is significant. An anholdt is a less restrictive measure and does not automatically lead to formal charges. The police must have a concrete reason to believe that the person has committed or is about to commit a criminal offense to justify an anholdt. If the grounds for the anholdt are not substantiated, the person must be released. If the police decide to pursue charges, the individual will then be formally arrested. This process is overseen by the Danish legal system to ensure individual rights are protected.
