Angajament is a Romanian noun that denotes a commitment, obligation, or pledge. Etymology and senses. Angajament originates from the French engouement/engagement, reflecting the idea of binding one’s word or obligations. In legal language, it designates a binding obligation arising from a contract or promise, such as a financial or performance obligation. In political or public discourse, it is often used to describe electoral commitments or policy promises that parties or leaders pledge to implement. In everyday speech, it can express personal dedication to a project, a cause, or a relationship.

Distinctions and usage. The Romanian term does not correspond exactly to the wedding-related concept, for which the standard term is logodnă (betrothal) or încurajare/căsătorie in different contexts. Angajament can thus refer to broader forms of commitment beyond marriage, including moral, professional, or contractual duties. It is common in business, law, and governance to speak of “angajamente contractuale,” “angajamente politice,” or “angajament personal.”
