Anfiarthrosis is a type of joint classification in anatomy. Joints are the connections between bones. They are categorized based on their structure and the degree of movement they permit. Anfiarthrosis falls into the category of slightly movable joints. These joints allow for some degree of motion, but it is limited compared to freely movable joints, known as diarthroses. The limited movement in anfiarthroses is typically achieved through the presence of fibrocartilage or a ligamentous structure that connects the bones.

Examples of anfiarthroses can be found throughout the human body. The joints between the vertebrae in the spinal column are a prime illustration. These intervertebral joints allow for a small amount of flexion, extension, and rotation, which collectively enable the spine's overall flexibility. Another example is the pubic symphysis, the joint located in the pelvis where the left and right pubic bones meet. This joint allows for very slight movement, which can become more pronounced during pregnancy and childbirth due to hormonal changes. The sacroiliac joints, where the sacrum connects to the ilium of the pelvis, are also often considered anfiarthroses, permitting minimal motion. The fibrous connective tissue that binds the bones in these joints provides stability while still allowing for a degree of adjustment and cushioning.
