Anastomosis is a connection or joining between two structures that are normally separate. In medicine, it most commonly refers to the surgical connection of two tubular structures, such as blood vessels or parts of the intestine. This procedure is essential for restoring continuity after tissue removal, repairing damage, or rerouting flow. For example, after a section of the bowel is removed due to disease, the remaining ends are surgically joined together, creating an anastomosis to allow for the normal passage of intestinal contents.

Similarly, in vascular surgery, anastomoses are crucial for bypass procedures. If a blood vessel is blocked, a surgeon can create an anastomosis between a healthy blood vessel and the vessel beyond the blockage, bypassing the obstruction and restoring blood flow. This can involve connecting an artery to another artery, a vein to another vein, or an artery to a vein. The success of an anastomosis depends on creating a watertight and leak-free connection that allows for proper healing and function. Factors such as the type of tissue, the surgical technique, and patient health all influence the outcome. Beyond surgical applications, anastomoses also occur naturally in the body, such as the network of blood vessels in the brain or the branching of arteries and veins, which provides redundant pathways for circulation.
