Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that advocates for stateless societies. These societies are understood to be based on voluntary associations. Anarchists generally believe that states are unnecessary, undesirable, and harmful. They view the state as a hierarchical power structure that oppresses individuals and hinders their freedom. There is a wide diversity of anarchist thought, but common themes include opposition to all forms of coercive authority, whether governmental, economic, or social.

Different schools of anarchist thought propose various methods for achieving a stateless society and different visions for how such a society would function. Some anarchists, known as anarcho-communists, advocate for a communal ownership of the means of production and distribution based on the principle of "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need." Others, like anarcho-syndicalists, focus on labor unions and worker control of industries as the primary means of organizing society. Mutualists emphasize free markets and voluntary cooperation without capitalist exploitation. There are also individualist anarchists who prioritize individual autonomy and self-ownership. Despite these differences, a core tenet across most anarchist traditions is the belief in self-governance and the rejection of imposed authority.
