analoogkandja

Analoogkandja is a term used in Estonian electronics and telecommunications to denote a carrier signal that carries analog information. The carrier is a periodic high-frequency waveform that is modulated by an information signal, allowing the continuous-valued data such as audio or video to be transmitted and later recovered. The word kandja means carrier, while analoog refers to the continuous nature of the signal, as opposed to digital signals.

In practice, analoogkandja appears in systems such as AM and FM radio, analog television, and other forms of legacy communications where the information modulates the carrier by changes in amplitude, frequency, or phase. The carrier itself is distinct from the modulated output, which encodes the information, and from the receiver, which demodulates the signal to retrieve the original content.

Compared with digital carriers, analoogkandja is more susceptible to noise and distortion and generally requires wider bandwidth for the same information fidelity. Over time, many regions have migrated to digital broadcasting and data transmission, leading to a decline in the use of pure analog carriers. Nevertheless, analog carriers remain relevant in certain applications and with legacy equipment, and the concept is still discussed in educational and technical literature as a foundational idea in modulation theory.
