Alpheid is a genus of pistol shrimp belonging to the family Alpheidae. These crustaceans are characterized by their asymmetrical claws, with one claw being significantly larger than the other. This large claw is capable of snapping shut with incredible speed, producing a cavitation bubble. When this bubble collapses, it generates a loud snap, a shockwave, and a brief flash of light and heat, a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence. This snap can stun or kill small prey like fish and other crustaceans.

Alpheids are found in marine environments worldwide, inhabiting a variety of habitats including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms. They are often found in association with other marine organisms, such as gobies, in a symbiotic relationship. The goby acts as a lookout, warning the shrimp of danger, while the shrimp provides a burrow for both to live in.
