Allodynia is a neurological condition characterized by pain that occurs in response to a stimulus that does not normally provoke pain. This means that sensations that are typically non-painful, such as light touch, pressure, or even temperature changes, can trigger an experience of pain in individuals with allodynia. It is considered a type of neuropathic pain, meaning the pain originates from damage or dysfunction of the nervous system.

There are different types of allodynia. Mechanical allodynia is pain elicited by light touch or pressure, such as the sensation of clothing against the skin or the weight of a blanket. Thermal allodynia occurs in response to normally non-painful temperature changes, like a cool breeze or warm water. Dynamic allodynia is pain caused by movement across the skin, such as stroking or brushing.

Allodynia can arise from various underlying conditions. These include nerve injuries, such as those sustained in accidents or surgery, and neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis or diabetic neuropathy. Migraine headaches are also frequently associated with allodynia, particularly during a migraine attack, where normally non-painful stimuli on the scalp or face can become painful. Other conditions that can contribute to allodynia include fibromyalgia and post-herpetic neuralgia, a complication of shingles. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history and neurological examination. Treatment strategies aim to manage the underlying cause and alleviate the pain, often involving medications such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants, or topical agents.
