Alkynes are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. The general formula for alkynes with one triple bond is CnH2n-2. The simplest alkyne is ethyne, also known as acetylene, with the formula C2H2. Alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons, meaning they contain fewer hydrogen atoms than the corresponding saturated hydrocarbon (alkane) with the same number of carbon atoms.

The carbon-carbon triple bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds. This triple bond is highly reactive due to the electron density of the pi bonds, making alkynes susceptible to addition reactions. Common reactions include hydrogenation, halogenation, and hydration, where the triple bond is broken and new atoms are added across the bond.

Alkynes exhibit linear geometry around the carbon atoms involved in the triple bond. This is because the carbon atoms in a triple bond are sp hybridized, resulting in bond angles of 180 degrees. The presence of the triple bond contributes to their acidity, particularly for terminal alkynes (where the triple bond is at the end of the carbon chain), which have relatively acidic hydrogen atoms.

Industrially, acetylene (ethyne) is produced from calcium carbide and water and is used in welding and as a precursor for synthesizing various organic compounds, including polymers and solvents. Other alkynes find applications in pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and as intermediates in organic synthesis.
