Alkutekijä is a Finnish term that translates to "prime factor" in English. A prime factor is a prime number that divides another number exactly, without leaving a remainder. Prime numbers are natural numbers greater than 1 that have no positive divisors other than 1 and themselves. Examples of prime numbers include 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, and so on.

The process of finding the prime factors of a number is called prime factorization. For instance, the prime factorization of 12 is 2 x 2 x 3. Here, 2 and 3 are the alkutekijät of 12. The unique prime factorization theorem states that every integer greater than 1 can be represented as a product of prime factors in only one way, apart from the order of the factors.

Prime factorization is a fundamental concept in number theory with various applications. It is used in finding the greatest common divisor (GCD) and the least common multiple (LCM) of two or more numbers. For example, to find the GCD of 12 and 18, we first find their prime factorizations: 12 = 2 x 2 x 3 and 18 = 2 x 3 x 3. The common prime factors are 2 and 3, so their GCD is 2 x 3 = 6. Similarly, for LCM, we take all prime factors with their highest powers: 2² x 3² = 4 x 9 = 36.

The concept of alkutekijät is also relevant in cryptography, particularly in algorithms like RSA, which rely on the difficulty of factoring large numbers into their prime components. Understanding prime factorization is therefore crucial for many mathematical and computational tasks.
