Alkiokäsittely, also known as alkaline treatment or alkali processing, is a method used to modify the properties of certain materials, particularly lignocellulosic biomass. The primary goal of alkiokäsittely is to break down the complex structure of these materials, making them more amenable to further processing or improving their suitability for specific applications.

In the context of biomass, alkiokäsittely typically involves treating the material with an alkaline solution, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH). The alkali acts to hydrolyze ester bonds and dissolve lignin and hemicellulose, which are key components that bind cellulose fibers together. This process leads to swelling of the cellulose fibers and can increase their surface area.

The extent of alkiokäsittely can be controlled by varying parameters such as the concentration of the alkali, temperature, treatment time, and the solid-to-liquid ratio. Different levels of treatment can yield materials with distinct characteristics. For instance, a mild treatment might be sufficient to improve digestibility for animal feed, while a more severe treatment might be necessary to prepare biomass for biofuel production or pulp manufacturing.

Alkiokäsittely is a common pretreatment step in various biorefining processes. It can enhance the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis for the production of sugars, which are then fermented into biofuels like ethanol. It is also employed in the paper industry to delignify wood pulp, making it easier to bleach and process into paper products. While effective, alkiokäsittely can generate alkaline wastewater that requires proper treatment before discharge.
