Alkenne is a chemical term referring to a class of hydrocarbons characterized by the presence of at least one carbon-carbon double bond. These compounds are unsaturated, meaning they contain fewer hydrogen atoms than the corresponding saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) with the same number of carbon atoms. The general formula for an acyclic alkene with one double bond is CnH2n.

The carbon-carbon double bond consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond. The pi bond is weaker and more reactive than the sigma bond, making alkenes susceptible to addition reactions. In these reactions, the pi bond breaks, and atoms or groups of atoms are added across the double bond, forming single bonds. Common addition reactions include hydrogenation (adding hydrogen), halogenation (adding halogens), and hydrohalogenation (adding hydrogen halides).

Alkenes are important intermediates in organic synthesis and are used in the production of various materials. For example, ethene (ethylene), the simplest alkene, is a crucial building block for polyethylene, a widely used plastic.
