Alfapektrometria is a technique used in analytical chemistry and nuclear physics to measure the kinetic energy distribution of alpha particles emitted from a radioactive sample. It is a form of spectrometry that identifies and quantifies alpha-emitting isotopes by their characteristic alpha particle energies.

The process typically involves placing a sample containing alpha-emitting radionuclides in a vacuum chamber. An alpha particle emitted from the sample enters a detector. Various types of detectors can be used, such as semiconductor detectors (like silicon surface-barrier detectors) or gas-filled detectors. These detectors convert the kinetic energy of the alpha particle into an electrical signal. The magnitude of this signal is proportional to the energy of the alpha particle.

A multichannel analyzer (MCA) is then used to process these signals. The MCA sorts the electrical pulses according to their amplitude, effectively sorting the alpha particles by their energy. The resulting data is displayed as a spectrum, which plots the number of alpha particles detected against their energy. Peaks in the spectrum correspond to specific alpha particle energies emitted by different isotopes.

By analyzing the positions and intensities of these peaks, one can identify the presence and quantity of various alpha-emitting isotopes within the sample.
