Aldosteronfrisättningen, or aldosterone release, refers to the process by which the hormone aldosterone is secreted from the adrenal glands. Aldosterone is a steroid hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and electrolyte balance, primarily sodium and potassium. Its release is tightly controlled by several factors.

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is the primary regulator of aldosterone secretion. When blood pressure drops, or when sodium levels are low, the kidneys release an enzyme called renin. Renin initiates a cascade of reactions that ultimately leads to the production of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor and also directly stimulates the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex to produce and release aldosterone.

Another significant stimulus for aldosterone release is elevated blood potassium levels. The adrenal cortex has specialized cells that sense changes in extracellular potassium concentration, and increased potassium directly promotes aldosterone secretion. Conversely, low potassium levels inhibit aldosterone release.

Sodium levels also influence aldosterone secretion, although indirectly through the RAAS. Low sodium intake or loss can lead to decreased blood volume and pressure, triggering the RAAS and subsequently aldosterone release. Aldosterone then acts on the kidneys to promote sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion, helping to restore normal blood volume and electrolyte balance. Hormonal factors, such as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the pituitary gland, can also have a minor stimulatory effect on aldosterone release.
