The alimentary canal is a continuous tube that runs from the mouth to the anus. Following the mouth, food passes through the pharynx and esophagus to the stomach. The stomach is a muscular organ that further breaks down food with digestive juices, including acids and enzymes. From the stomach, partially digested food moves into the small intestine. This is the primary site for nutrient absorption, where enzymes from the pancreas and liver further break down food, and the resulting nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Undigested material then moves into the large intestine, where water is absorbed, and waste products are formed into feces. Finally, feces are eliminated from the body through the anus. The entire process is regulated by a combination of muscular contractions, hormones, and nerves. The specific length and complexity of the alimentary canal are often correlated with the animal's diet; herbivores, for instance, typically have longer digestive tracts than carnivores to accommodate the slower digestion of plant matter.
