Subconcepts inherit the properties of their superconcepts and add more specific attributes. In knowledge representation, the relation is often described as subsumption or an is-a relationship, indicating that every instance of the subconcept is also an instance of its superconcept.

Formally, the subconcept relation is typically transitive: if A is a subconcept of B and B is a subconcept of C, then A is a subconcept of C. In many frameworks it is antisymmetric, so if A is a subconcept of B and B of A, then A and B are the same concept. The relation thereby induces a partial order on the set of concepts.

Limitations and variations: Some domains allow multiple inheritance, where a concept can be a subconcept of more than one superconcept. Real-world ontologies may employ disjoint or overlapping hierarchies or include relations beyond is-a, such as part-of or has-property.
