Akvaponikka is a sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture (raising aquatic animals like fish) with hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil). In an aquaponic system, the waste produced by fish is broken down by beneficial bacteria into nutrients that plants can absorb. These nutrients then fertilize the plants, which in turn help to purify the water, making it suitable to return to the fish.

This symbiotic relationship creates a closed-loop ecosystem where both the fish and the plants benefit. The fish are provided with a clean environment, and the plants receive a natural source of fertilizer. Aquaponics can be implemented in various scales, from small home systems to larger commercial operations. The system typically consists of three main components: a fish tank, a grow bed for the plants, and a filtration system. Water from the fish tank, containing fish waste, is pumped to the grow bed. Here, bacteria convert ammonia from the waste into nitrates, which are then absorbed by the plant roots. The purified water is then recirculated back to the fish tank.
