Akvaponia is a sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture, the farming of aquatic animals like fish, with hydroponics, the cultivation of plants in water. In an aquaponic system, the waste produced by the aquatic animals is broken down by beneficial bacteria into nutrients that can be used by the plants. The plants, in turn, filter the water, returning clean water to the aquatic animals.

This symbiotic relationship creates a closed-loop ecosystem. Fish waste, rich in ammonia, is converted by nitrifying bacteria into nitrites and then nitrates.
