These environments are typically waterlogged and acidic, creating conditions that inhibit complete decomposition. The "aktiivi" or active aspect denotes a peatland that is still undergoing significant peat formation and carbon sequestration. This contrasts with degraded or drained peatlands where decomposition rates may exceed accumulation.

Active peatlands are crucial for global carbon cycling, as they store vast amounts of organic carbon in their peat layers, acting as significant carbon sinks. The hydrological regime is a key factor in maintaining their active status. Consistent water saturation is essential to both promote peat accumulation and prevent the release of stored carbon through oxidation.
