Ainemolekyylin, also known as amino acid, is a fundamental building block of proteins and plays a crucial role in various biological processes. It consists of an amino group (-NH2), a carboxyl group (-COOH), a hydrogen atom, and a unique side chain (R) that distinguishes each amino acid from others. There are 20 standard amino acids, each with its own specific side chain, which contribute to the diverse structures and functions of proteins.

Amino acids are classified into two main groups based on their side chains: nonpolar (hydrophobic) and polar (hydrophilic). Nonpolar amino acids have side chains that are hydrophobic and tend to cluster together in the interior of proteins, while polar amino acids have side chains that are hydrophilic and are often found on the surface of proteins, where they interact with water molecules.

Amino acids can be further classified into essential and nonessential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained through the diet, while nonessential amino acids can be synthesized by the body.
