Aikavyöhykkeelle refers to the concept of time zones and their implementation. A time zone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for all legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones are essentially necessitated by the Earth's rotation on its axis and the fact that different parts of the planet face the sun at different times. Without time zones, noon would occur at widely varying times across a country or even a continent, leading to significant logistical confusion.

The system of time zones was largely standardized in the late 19th century, coinciding with the expansion of railway networks that required coordinated schedules across vast distances. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was initially adopted as the primary reference point. Today, most time zones are defined by their offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is based on atomic clocks and has largely replaced GMT as the standard. The offsets can be whole hours, half-hours, or even quarter-hours in some cases. The International Date Line, roughly following the 180th meridian, marks where the date changes. Traveling westward across the line means advancing the calendar day, while traveling eastward means setting it back.
