Aikajärjestelmiä, or time systems, refers to the various methods and frameworks used to measure, organize, and record time. These systems are fundamental to human society, enabling coordination, planning, and historical record-keeping.

The most prevalent system globally is the Gregorian calendar, a solar calendar that divides the year into 12 months and uses a leap year system to approximate the Earth's orbital period around the sun. This calendar is the de facto international standard for civil purposes. However, many other calendar systems exist, often based on lunar cycles, solar cycles, or a combination of both, and are used for religious, cultural, or historical reasons. Examples include the Islamic calendar, the Hebrew calendar, and various traditional East Asian calendars.

Beyond calendars, time systems also encompass the way we divide and measure shorter periods. The concept of hours, minutes, and seconds is derived from ancient Babylonian and Egyptian systems, which were later refined. The modern standard for timekeeping is based on atomic clocks, which provide incredibly precise measurements of time intervals, underpinning technologies like GPS and telecommunications.

The way time is represented can also vary. Some cultures historically used cyclical time concepts, while others adopted linear progression. The understanding and perception of time itself can also be influenced by cultural and philosophical viewpoints, impacting how societies organize daily life, work, and social interactions. Even within a single society, different time systems may coexist, such as academic semesters, fiscal years, or historical periods, each serving a specific organizational purpose.
