aigís

Aigís, also spelled Aegis, is a shield of Greek mythology. It is often described as an object of immense power, providing protection and even bearing the likeness of Medusa's head. The aegis was said to be made by Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths, and was gifted to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. Athena is frequently depicted carrying the aegis, a symbol of her divine authority and protective prowess. In some accounts, the aegis was also associated with Zeus, king of the gods, who lent it to Athena. Its presence was believed to strike terror into the hearts of enemies and ward off any danger. The term "aegis" has since entered common language to refer to any kind of protection or sponsorship, often in a metaphorical sense. For example, a project might be undertaken "under the aegis of" a particular organization. This linguistic evolution reflects the enduring symbolic power of the mythical shield.
