Aerosols are tiny particles or droplets suspended in a gas, typically air. These particles can vary widely in size, composition, and origin, and they play significant roles in both natural and human-made environments. Aerosols are classified based on their sources, chemical composition, and size distribution, which can range from less than 0.01 micrometers to over 100 micrometers in diameter.

Natural sources of aerosols include volcanic eruptions, dust storms, sea spray, and biological emissions such as pollen and spores. Human activities, particularly industrial processes, transportation, and agriculture, also contribute significantly to aerosol production. Combustion processes, for example, release particulate matter (PM) containing soot, ash, and various chemicals. Agricultural practices, such as tilling soil, can generate dust particles, while vehicle emissions produce a mix of gases and fine particles.

Aerosols have diverse effects on the environment and human health. In the atmosphere, they influence cloud formation, precipitation patterns, and climate by scattering and absorbing sunlight. Some aerosols, like black carbon, can warm the atmosphere by absorbing solar radiation, while others, such as sulfate particles, reflect sunlight and have a cooling effect. At ground level, aerosols—particularly fine particulate matter—can pose health risks by penetrating deep into the respiratory system, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Regulating aerosol emissions is a key focus of environmental policies. Strategies include reducing industrial pollution, improving fuel efficiency in vehicles, and implementing dust control measures in agricultural and construction activities. Monitoring and studying aerosols help scientists better understand their impacts and develop mitigation strategies to protect both human health and the environment.
