Actinium was discovered in 1899 by French chemist André-Louis Debierne. He identified it in pitchblende, a uranium ore. It was later isolated in 1902 by German chemist Friedrich Oskar Giesel. The element's name comes from the Greek word "aktis," meaning "ray," due to its intense radioactivity.

Actinium is found in trace amounts in uranium ores. It is produced artificially by bombarding radium with neutrons in a nuclear reactor. Due to its intense radioactivity and short half-life, actinium is not found in significant quantities in nature.

The primary use of actinium is in scientific research. Actinium-225, an isotope with a half-life of 10 days, is being investigated for use in targeted alpha therapy for cancer treatment. Its ability to emit alpha particles, which have a short range and high energy, can damage cancer cells while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues. However, due to the challenges in production and handling of this highly radioactive element, its applications are currently limited.
