Aardgasafval, often translated as natural gas waste or flare gas, refers to the natural gas that is deliberately burned or released into the atmosphere during oil and gas extraction and processing. This occurs primarily for safety reasons when the gas cannot be economically captured or transported, or when it contains impurities that make it unsuitable for sale.

The most common method of dealing with aardgasafval is through flaring, where the gas is ignited and burned at the top of a tall stack. Flaring converts most of the methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into carbon dioxide and water vapor, which are less harmful in the short term, although still contribute to climate change. Venting, the direct release of natural gas into the atmosphere without burning, is less common due to its significant environmental impact.

Aardgasafval represents a significant loss of a valuable energy resource. Efforts are underway globally to reduce flaring and venting by improving infrastructure for gas capture, processing, and transportation. Technologies such as gas re-injection, using the gas for on-site power generation, or converting it into liquefied natural gas (LNG) are being implemented to minimize waste and mitigate environmental consequences. The reduction of aardgasafval is a key objective in the broader goal of sustainable energy production and climate change mitigation.
