Aakkosjärjestelmistä, commonly known as alphabets, are systems of writing where each symbol, or letter, represents a phoneme, a basic unit of sound in a language. This is in contrast to syllabaries, where symbols represent syllables, or logographic systems, where symbols represent words or morphemes. Alphabets provide a relatively efficient way to represent language, as the number of phonemes in a language is typically much smaller than the number of syllables or words.

The development of alphabetic writing systems is believed to have originated in the ancient Near East. The Proto-Sinaitic script, dating back to the 19th century BCE, is considered one of the earliest alphabetic scripts. This script influenced later Semitic alphabets, such as Phoenician, which in turn gave rise to the Greek alphabet. The Greek alphabet introduced vowels as distinct letters, a significant innovation that distinguished it from earlier abjads, which primarily represented consonants.

From the Greek alphabet, various European alphabets evolved, including the Latin alphabet, which is now the most widely used alphabet in the world, forming the basis of writing systems for many Romance, Germanic, and other languages. Other major alphabets include the Cyrillic alphabet, used for Slavic languages, and the Arabic alphabet, used for Arabic and many other languages in the Middle East and Asia. The structure and specific letters within each alphabet are adapted to the phonological features of the language it represents. The concept of an alphabet has been foundational to the dissemination of knowledge and the development of literacy across diverse cultures.
