Aéroplane is a French term for airplane, a powered, fixed-wing aircraft heavier than air, whose lift is generated by the aerodynamic reaction of the wings as they move through the air. The term was coined by French aviation pioneer Clément Ader. Ader built and flew a steam-powered aircraft named the Éole in 1890, which he considered to be the first "aéroplane."
